Bloemfontein -
A security guard was shot and killed at a Bothaville bank in the Free State, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Wednesday.
The shooting took place on Monday after police received a report about intruders inside an Absa Bank, spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.
“The police responded by rushing to the scene at the same time security guards from Fidelity in Welkom also rushed to the same scene.
“The security guards apparently parked their vehicle at the back of the bank whilst the police members were parked at the main entrance in front of the bank.”
He said both the police and the security guards were armed with pistols and rifles.
“It is alleged that the security guards approached the main entrance from different angles.”
He said a guard approached two officers standing behind marked police cars. They shouted at him to stop, Dlamini said.
“It is alleged that the security guard did not stop but continued running towards the police members with a rifle in his hand despite a warning shot having been fired.”
The officers shot him and he died at the scene. The IPID took over the scene and the investigation.
Dlamini said there were no independent witnesses at the scene and no intruders were found inside the bank.
“No arrests have been made. The investigation continues.” - Sapa
