Johannesburg - Seventy-two people were injured when a bus overturned near Rosendal in the Free State in the early hours of Tuesday morning, paramedics said.
The fully laden bus was travelling on the R70 road before it rolled several times down an embankment, eventually coming to rest on its side, said Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.
Paramedics arrived and found two occupants trapped in the wreckage. They were freed by rescue technicians using hydraulic rescue equipment.
“The other injured passengers had clambered from the upended bus and were found near it,” said Wicks. “Ten were in a serious condition and the remaining 60 were classified as walking wounded, having sustained only minor injuries.”
All the injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were taken to the Dihlabeng, Senekal and Ficksburg hospitals for further treatment. - Sapa
