The Free State government has applied for a state funeral for former premier Winkie Direko, provincial spokesman Mondli Mvambi said on Monday.
Direko, 82, died of a stroke in Bloemfontein's Universitas hospital on Friday after she complained of feeling sick the night before.
Mvambi said the premier’s office had asked the presidency for an official burial for Direko.
A memorial service would be held for her at the Mangaung Indoor Sport Centre on Thursday at 2pm.
Mvambi said this was decided after a meeting with her family on Monday.
The funeral would be on Saturday. - Sapa
