Opera UCT is set to enthral music lovers once again as it announces the launch concert for its much-anticipated third season as a production house. Taking place at the esteemed Baxter Concert Hall on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, the evening promises a breathtaking display of talent from the school’s rising stars, alongside a sneak peek into the exciting season set to unfold in 2025.

The concert, a one-time-only event, offers tickets ranging from R50 to R150, available through Webtickets. Following the performance, attendees will be invited to a special meet-the-cast reception, where they can engage with the performers while enjoying a glass of wine.

This year's launch is designed to evoke joy and celebration, showcasing a delightful mélange of duets, trios, quartets, and choruses from beloved operas including La Bohème, Rigoletto, and Porgy and Bess. Adding depth to the evening, Professor Jeremy Silver, the director of Opera UCT, will share his insights and anecdotes between the musical performances, providing audiences with the stories behind the repertoire and the artists who will grace the stage.

“We are incredibly proud of what our young artists have achieved,” comments Professor Silver. “Opera UCT continues to produce world-class talent, with many of our singers making their mark on prestigious international stages. This launch not only celebrates their accomplishments but also welcomes our new students and shares our passion for opera with the Cape Town community.”

Among the performers is tenor Luvo Maranti, an Operalia finalist who is currently enjoying a valuable residency at the National Opera Studio in London. This February marks a special month for Luvo, not just for his career milestone, but also for his recent engagement to fellow Opera UCT graduate Moloko Letsoalo, who is also a National Opera Studio artist.

During the concert, Opera UCT will make several key announcements that further reinforce its international reputation for producing exceptional talent. “Come and see these rising stars before they leave our shores—you won’t want to miss it,” encourages Professor Silver, as he invites music lovers to partake in this unique event.

After a stellar 2024, which included the world premiere of Dalinda, the 2025 season promises an exciting array of performances. Highlights include a major production of Die Fledermaus, an operetta filled with fun, and Opera UCT’s contribution to SHORTS: a Festival of short operas taking place in March. Additional concerts will feature at the second winter arts festival, HEAT, amongst other events planned throughout the year.

Moreover, Opera UCT will host its annual competitions, masterclasses, and special concerts, ensuring another busy and productive period for South Africa’s foremost opera training establishment.
